Common Name Gardner's Barbosella [English Botanist and Collector in Brazil early 1900's]

Flower Size .1" [3mm]

Found in Sao Paulo, Espirito Santo and Rio de Janiero States of Brazil in very wet, shady forests around swamps, streams and rivers at elevations of 1000 to 1400 meters as a mini-miniature sized, cool growing epiphyte with an erect ramicaul carrying a single, apical, ovate, acute leaf that blooms in the later summer on an erect, stiff, 1.2" [3 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence.

Lindley originally did not cite a type for this genus, so Angley in 1969 proposed Barbosella miersii as the lectotype. Luer felt that B miersii was substantially different than the norm of Barbosella and actually moved it to a monotypic genus Barbrodia and assigned B gardneri as the lectotype but according to the ICBN reassignment of a lectotype to another genus was illegal. Therefore B miersii stays as the Lectotype.
