Found from Malaysia South to Borneo, the Moluccas, Sulawesi, Sumatra and New Guinea in hill forests at elevations of 200 to 300 meters as a small sized, hot growing epiphyte with a monopodial, short stem carrying a few rather broad, fleshy, somewhat flaccid, flushed with purple leaves that are widest in the apical portion and have a broad tip that blooms in the winter on a pendulous, 3 1/4" [to 8 cm] long inflorescence with a thickened rhachis and carrying very closely set, short-lived flowers
