Common Name The Bearded Catasetum

Flower Size 2" [5 cm]

From Guyana, Surinam, Brazil, Colombia, Venzuela and Peru in rainforests along rivers and streams as a small to medium sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte that loses its leaves in the winter so it needs a definite rest. When the new growth appears and is more than 2" it is time to water and fertilize heavily, and as the leaves yellow in the fall it is time to slow water to a trickle and stop fertilizing. The orchid has fusiform pseudobulbs enveloped by papery white sheaths and carrying 7, linear-oblanceolate, 3 prominently veined, plicate leaves that blooms in the spring, summer and occasionally again in the fall on a suberect to pendant, 18" [45 cm] long, many [20] flowered, racemose inflorescence arising on a mature pseudobulb and carrying fleshy, fragrant flowers in the apical half.

This species is a hot to warm growing species requiring very bright light. They have oblong-fusiform pseudobulbs enveloped basally by several leaf-bearing sheaths carrying membranous, oblanceolate or lanceolate, distichous, deciduous leaves that sheath the pseudobulb and are 14-16 inches in length, the inflorescence is basal, erect, and single sexed, with male or female flowers.
