Common Name or Meaning The Variegated Leaf Cystorchis

Found in Borneo, Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, the Philippines and Vanuatu in lowland, hill and mointane forests on sandstone at elevations around 200 to 1500 meters as a small to medium sized, hot to warm growing terrestrial orchid with a decumbent, terete stem rooting all along, and then ascending for 1 to 2" [2.5 to 4.5 cm] turning pale green and having 5 to 6, obliquely ovate, acute, undulate margins, velvety red-brown [var purpurea] and green with paler veins [var variegata] and paler below on both, narrowing to the channeled petilolate base leaf that blooms on an erect, terete, pubescent, 4.8 to 6.6" [12 cm to 16.5 cm] long, many [10 to 12] flowered inflorescence with 2 tubular sheaths and ovate, pubescent, concave, reddish floral bracts and all the flowers held toward the apex.

A red color variety from Borneo and Java in primary lowlanda and hill forests at elevations of sea-level to 700 meters that is commonly called Cystorchis javanica. Differ mostly in the color of the leaves, this one has dark wine red, more finely undulate leaves , closer spaces flowers, with greenish and boadened basally, reddish in the center and paler apically on the sepals with white, oblong-linear, margins finely pilose petals and has a basally white, reddish in the center, paler towards the apex lip and a smaller apical lamina. Cystorhcis variegata has light green with dark green tessellated, more finely undulate leaves, sepals colored yellowish basally, reddish brown centrally, and cream apically, petals that are lanceolate and white and a "lip with a small 1/2 round almost triangular lamina".
