Found in Chongqing, north Guangdong, southeastern Guangxi, western Guizhou, western Hubei, Hunan and southeastern Yunnan provinces of China in montane valleys and on forest margins on rocks at elevations of 1000 to 1500 meters as a large sized, cool growing lithophyte with cylindric, slightly rigid, many noded, several longitudinal ridged stems carrying many, in two rows, oblong, leathery, acute apically, contracted into the clasping sheath below leaves that blooms in the late fall and early winter on a short to .8" [2 cm] long, lateral to axillary, 1 flowered inflorescence arising from the upper nodes of the stem and carrying waxy, slightly fleshy flowers

This species is very close to D henryi and may be conspecific with that species
