Common Name The Variable Dendrobium

Found in India, the Ryukyu Islands, Sumatra and Java at elevations up to 700 meters as a small sized, cool to hot growing epiphyte with slender, crowded, thickened in the middle, erect to drooping, frequently branching, red, furrowed with age stems carrying 3 to 10, evergreen, lanceolate, tinged with violet beneath leaves blooming throughout the year and often more than once on an apical, to 7" [17.5 cm]long, often branching, usually erect, few to several [4 to 15] flowered inflorescence with variable colored flowers that last about 2 weeks. WAter and fertilizer should be reduced for 2 to 3 months in the winter and resumed only after new growth emerges in the spring.
