Found in New Caledonia in hills and montane forests on trees at elevations of 100 to 700 meters as a mini-miniature sized, hot to warm growing epiphtye with a short rhizome giving rise to oblong, ovoid to cylindrical, lightly grooved pseudobulbs carrying 2 to 3, apical, oblong, erect-spreading leaves that blooms in the late spring on a short, 1 to 3 flowered inflorescence arising from the apex of the stem and carry large flowers for the size of the plant.

This species is superficially similar to D closterium but differs in the size of the plant, the bilobed lip and the wavy calli of the lip
