Found in Ghana, Nigeria, Zaire, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi in deep shade in evergreen forests at elevations of 1050 to 1300 meters as a mini-miniature to large sized, warm growing terrestrial saprophyte with subterranean, fleshy rhizomes without leaves giving rise in the summer to an erect, laxly to densely few to many flowered inflorescence with 2 to 3 tubular bracts towards the base and 2 to 4, lanceolate, acuminate bracts above
