Found in Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Zaire, Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbawe and Botswana in swampy grasslands, in tall grasses at swamp and dambo margins, and beside rivers in swampy areas at elevations of 1000 to1600 meters as a large to giant sized, warm to cool growing terrestrial with subterranean, obliquely conical tuberous growths giving rise to 2 to 5, lanceolate, acuminate, petiolate base leaves that are not fully developed at blooming in the later spring and early summer onm an erect, to 48" [120 cm] long, stout, densely several to many flowered inflorescence with 4 to 5, loose bracts and has elliptic, acute, in opposute pairs each enclosing 1 to 2 flowers and carrys sub-nutant flowerws
