Common Name Madero's Habenaria [Colombia orchid collector 1800's]
Flower Size .32" [8 mm]
Found in Antioquia and Magdalena departments of Colombia, Zamora-Chinchipe department of Ecuador and Merida state of Venezuela in paramo on steep rocky slopes at elevations of 2200 to 2500 meters as a small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with an erect strem carrying 7 to 8 , linaer-ligulate to narrowly lanceolate, acute, gradually decreasing in size above leaves that blooms in the later summer on an erect, terminal, 2.4 to 8" [6 to 20 cm] long, subdensely many flowered inflorescence with narrowly lanceolate, acuminate, longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying small flowers.
"According to Schlechter this species is closely related to H edwallii but differs in the spur which is not so distinctly swollen at the apex snd the obscure anterior petal lobes. H gollmeri is similar and has been proposed as synonymic but it differs from H maderoi in having a constantly prominent anterior petal lobe which in H maderoi is reduced to a small, acute, basal tooth. H maderoi is also similar to H parviflora as in both species the anterior petal lobe is reduced and obscure. The spur form distinguishes them clearly, the spur of H maderoi is much longer, .56 to .6" [14 to 15 mm] long, and subobtuse, whereas in H parviflora it is short, .18 to .2" [4.5 to 5 mm] long and acute."
