Found in New Guinea in humus in primary forests at elevations of 400 to 1000 meters as a giant sized, hot to warm growing terrestrial with an erect, in basal half with 5 to 7 scale-like leaves, 7 to 8 leaved near the middle stem with erect-patent, approximate, elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, acuminate leaves that blooms in the fall and late winter on an erect, peduncle-scales bract-like, rachis 5.2" [13 cm] long, densely 15 to 25 flowered flowered inflorescence with lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, acuminate, as long as or slightly longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying greenish flowers.
"Habenaria trichaete is similar to H. novae-hiberniae, as both share similar habit and relatively small flowers with lip lobes not exceeding .48" [12 mm] in length. In the former species, however, the leaves are wider 1.8 to 2" vs .8 to 1" (4.5 to 5 cm vs 2 to 2.5 cm), the floral bract is as long as or longer than pedicellate ovary (vs prominently shorter), and the lip middle lobe is longer than both laterals (vs lip middle lobe prominently shorter than lateral ones)."
