Found in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, Fr Guiana, Surinam, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina in mangrove swamps, grassy areas and in lowland savannas at elevations of 800 to 1625 meters as a small to medium sized, warm growing terrestrial orchid with an erect stem completely enveloped by leaf bearing sheaths carrying 4 to 8, narrow, acuminate, erect to patent, basally clasping leaves that blooms in the summer and fall on a terminal, few [1 to 3] flowered inflorescence.
