Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.
The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the namer of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the namer of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.
If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `
! denotes the Type Species of the genus
* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon
I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

Oberonia Lindley 1830 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Malaxideae,
There are 330 epiphytes in this genus without psuedobulbs that are found throughout the Old World tropics. Mostly epiphytic but has an occasional terrestrial, this genus is comprised of small to medium sized, erect to pendant, clustered, leafy, short to elongate stems carrying fleshy, disitchous, fan-shaped, bilaterally compressed t oterete, often jointed to a compressed basal leaf sheath. They bloom on terminal, racemose to spicate, densely many flowered, cylindric inflorescence and have non-resupinate, flat, minute to small, spiral to verticulate flowers with spreading, free, subsimilar petals and sepals and a sessile, deflexed, entire to variously lobed, auriculate basally, ecallose, often erose lip with a very short, fleshy column mostly enveloped by basal suricles of the lip and has 4, pyriform, waxy pollina.

Octomeria R. Brown 1813 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Pleurothallidinae
The name of this genus, Octomeria, refers to it's eight pollina. There are close to 150 species of lithophytic or epiphytic, miniature, psuedobulbless, orchids. They have terrete leaves that give rise to a short inflorescence with one to many flowers. All species are characterized by a fascile of single flowers emerging laterally from near the apex of the ramicaul without an annulus. The sepals are usually equal and free, but in a few species the lateral sepals are patially or nearly wholly connate. The petals are large and membranous, similar to the sepals. The lip is usually variously lobed below the middle witha pair of carinae on the disc, and the base is hinged to the column foot. They require a fine medium in a small pot with shade, regular water, fertilize monthly while growing, and high humidity for the semi-rest after blooming.

Odontoglossum H.B.K. SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Maxillareae SUBTRIBE Oncidiinae
There are 60 species that are concentrated around the northern Andes that grow as epiphytes, lithophytes and rarely as terrestrials with compressed pseudobulbs, one to three leafed and an inflorescence that arises, erect or arching and occasionally pendulous, from the base of the pseudobulb with flowers that have spreading sepals and petals, a complex labellum, tri-lobed or entire, erect or parrellel to the column, and lateral lobes that are erect or revolute and the mid-lobe is spreading. It has a long column with 2 pollina and is very compatible genetically with all Oncidinae and as such has a long and varied breeding history. Odontoglossum are found only inthe Andes Of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in cloud forests at elevations of 1400 to 3500 meters and as such are all cool to cold growing orchids found on trees, or as terrestrails on roadsides and bleak upland hillsides. There are two distinct groups and 6 subgenera, the first are the high altitude plants which is made up of 2 subgenera which have long paniculate inflorescence with up to one hundred flowers while the lower elevation plants are represented by four subgenera and they all have shorter inflorescence with up to 20 large showy flowers.

Most species are found in Africa and Madagascar but one, Oeclades macuata is found in Africa as well as the Americas from Florida south to Argentina including the West Indies. The genus is characterixed by having a pseudobulb with a single, apical, flat, green often spotted with white leaf and an erect, basal inflorescencewith flowers that have free-spreading sepals and petals, a four lobed lip with a basal, saccate spur which is fused to the column-foot, the column with a sulcate underside carrying 2 hard pollina attached to a viscidium.
Common Name refers to Lindley's Separation of this genus from Angraecum - private branch in Greek

Oestlundia W.E. Higgins 2001 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Laeliinae.
There are 4 species in this genus of small plants with narrow leaves that was segregated from Epidendrum/Encyclia . They typically have 2 to 3 leaves per pseudobulb and terminal, simple or branched inflorescence and large flowers for the size of the orchid. The lip is adnate to the column and the lip blade had low keels that become distally warty and the column has a rounded mid-tooth that is much shorter than the winglike lateral teeth that surpass the anther. The columns do not produce the ear-like lateral projections more common to Encyclia.
Common Name or Meaning Named for Mr Karl Oestlund a Swedish Colletor of the type species late 1800's early 1900's

`Omoea Blume 1825 SUBFAMILY Epidendrodeae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Aeridinae.
Two species make up this genus endemic to the Philippines that is comprised of miniature twig epiphytes with thick fleshy leaves and 2 ranked, they bloom on single flowered resupinate fleshy flowers with similar sepals and petals and the trilobed, spoureed lip is firmly affixed to the column which is short, without a foot, and has two pollina..
Common Name or Meaning refers to it's similarity to Ceratochilis

Oncidium Sw. 1800 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Maxillarieae SUBTRIBE Oncidiinae.
Almost 600 species make up the genus distinguished by 1 or 2 leafed flattened psuedobulbs usually subtended by distichous leaflike sheaths where the inflorescence emerges from their axil. The flowers are spurless, with the basal part of the lip spread from the column which has no foot, and often with elaborate wings on either side of the stigma. Oncidiums can be epiphytes or more rarely grow on embankments and terrestrially, where they can enjoy any of the four climes depending on the specific environment for that species. There are many potting factors as well but most can adapt to pots, wood mounts, and wood slat baskets. The Oncidium alliance, which includes Odontoglossum, Brassia, Aspasia, Miltonia, Leochilus and many others are intercrossed often in orchid cultivation and are most likely the third most common cultivated orchid after Cattleyas and Dendrobiums.
Common Name or Meaning refers to the warty callus on the base of the lip
