Found in the Appalachian Mountains of the USA from Pennsylvania to Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina in shady forest, among Rhododendrons, and in ravines where it blooms on an erect, lax raceme with up to 15 flowers that occur in the late spring and early summer.
