Common Name The Red Sudamerlycaste

Found in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador at elevations of 1050 to 2500 meters as a large sized, warm to cool growing terrestrial with ovoid pseudobulb subtended by several imbricating bracts, with the uppermost leaf bearing, yet shorter than the 2 apical, lanceolate, strongly ribbed, long-petiolate with a deep "u" shape channel, acuminate leaves that blooms in the winter and spring in nature on an erect, 20" [50 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence, arising from a mature pseudobulb, with 5 to 6 large, tubular, close bracts and ovate, tubular acuminate, subinfundibuliform floral bracts and nodding, fleshy-rigid, campanulate, fragrant flowers held at mid-leaf. This species is distiguished from others by the large flower, a callus with 5 ribs at the base and the intense orange color of the labellum.
