Common Name The Long Tail Masdevallia

Flower Size to 10" [to 25 cm] largest in the genus

A medium sized, cold to warm growing, Colombian and Ecuadorian species found at elevations of 2300-2600 meters as a lithophyte on mossy, plant covered rocks in cloud forests with a 6" [15 cm] long, stout stem enveloped basally by 2 to 3 loose, inflated tubualr sheaths carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, elliptical, obtuse leaf that is cuneate below into the channeled petiole that blooms in the winter till early spring with an erect, stout, to 12" [30 cm] long inflorescence arising from the midlle of the ramicaul with a keeled, white, membraneous bract below the middle and a floral bract holding the large, showy, rigidly fleshy flower well above the leaf.
