Common Name Strobel's Masdevallia [German Orchid Collector in Ecuador 1900's]

Flower Size 1 to 1 1/2" [2 to 4 cm]

An epiphytic, miniature, warm to cool growing species from Ecuador and Peru on the lower branches of trees along or near riverbanks at elevations around 1400 to 1700 meters with slender, erect, ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3 loose tubular sheaths carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, elliptical, acute leaf with the base cuneate into the slender petiole tha blooms with a slender, suberect to horizontal, 1 15" to 1 4/5" [3 to 4.5 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence arising from low on the ramicaul with a bract above the base and a floral bract holding the showy, fragrant [candy] flowers at mid leaf occuring in the early winter. This species does well either potted or mounted if grown in cool to warm temperatures, kept moist, and given moderate light to heavy shade.
