Found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in tepui shrublands at elevations of 1900 to 2600 meters as a small to giant sized, cold growing epiphyte or terrestrial, with a monopodial or pseduomonopodial cane-like stem enveloped completely by imbricate, tubular scarious sheaths below and leaf-bearing sheaths above and carrying linear, acute, gradually becoming conduplicate below into the clasping base leaves that blooms on an several to many, axillary, short, single flowered inflorescence
