Common Name The Flag-Like Miltonopsis

Flower Size 3 to 4" [7.5 to 10 cm]

The type species for Miltonopsis is an erect, small sized, cold to warm growing, epiphytic orchid from Antioquia, Risaralda and Valle de cauca departments of Colombia and northern Ecuador and is found at an altitude of 1000-2200 meters at the edges of very wet montane cloud forests with oblong-ellipsoid, compressed, ancipitous on the edges, gray green pseudobulbs enveloped basally by several, distichous, imbricating sheaths with the uppermost 3 to 6 being foliaceous and carrying a single apical, strap-like, acute, pale gray green leaf that blooms in the spring and fall on a basal, lateral, slender, arching 12 to 20" [30 to 50 cm] long inflorescence arising on a mature pseudobulb that has small lanceolate bracts and with about 4 to 9, flat flowers.
