Found in southwestern California and Mexico in flat to fairly steep areas in full sun, on exposed ridges that top the chaparral covered foothills and on mesa headlands near the ocean at elevations of sea level to 900 meters as a large sized, cold growing terrestrial with withered leaves at blooming which occurs in the springon an erect, many [100] flowered inflorescence.
