Found in Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ontario, Labrador, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Islands, Quebec, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey in open wet meadows, roadside ditches and seeps, fens, bogs and river gravels as a miniature to large sized, cold growing terrestrial with 2 to 4, cauline, linear-lanceolate, gradually reduced to bracts above leaves that blooms in the late spring through summer on a terminal, erect, 4 to 40" [10 to 100 cm] long, loosely to densely, 8 to 75+ flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, much longer than the ovary floral bracts.
