Common Name Small Purple Fringed Orchid - The Butterfly Platanthera
Flower Size 5/8" [1.7 cm]
Found as a large sized, cold growing terrestrial in wet thickets, meadows, swamps and bogs from the eastern to central USA and Canada with numerous fleshy roots and 2 to 5 basal, conduplicate, elliptic to lanceolate, acute, keeled on the back, dark green leaves with basal leaf sheaths and blooms on a 3/4 to 2 3/4" 20 to 80 cm] long, erect, stout, leafy, many [20 to 50] flowered, racemose inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate floral bracts and fragrant flowers occuring in the summer.
