Found in Amazonas department of Peru in cloud forests on low branches of remnant trees at elevations around 1900 meters as a small sized, cool growing epiphyte with stout, erect, terete ramicauls enveloped at the base by 2 tubular sheaths carrying a single, apical, erect, thickly coriaceous, sessile, elliptical, obtuse, cuneate into the sessile base leaf that blooms in the late spring on 1 to 3, peduncle c. .4" [1 cm] long, subtended by an ovate spathaceous bract, successively single, 2 flowered inflorescence with infundibular, thin, obtuse, longer than the ovary floral bracts.
"Similar to Echinosepala biseta [Luer] Pupulin from which it differs by the leaf shorter than the ramicaul and proportionally wider, a shorter peduncle bearing 2 flowers, smaller, glabrous flowers, with yellowish sepals, an oblong and 3-veined dorsal sepal, acute petals with slightly erose margins above the middle, and a narrower lip with obtuse apex with a mucro. Another similar species is P auriculata Lindl which differs from E berlinensis in having long inflorescences, almost equal to the leaves bearing 5 or more flowers vs. short inflorescence bearing 1 to 2 flowers, flowers small, almost half the dimensions of E. berlinensis, sepals, .2" [5 mm] vs. .36" [9 mm] long; synsepal, .1 to .12" [2.5 to 3 mm] vs. .2" [5 mm] wide, carinate sepals and transverse callus at the base of the lip vs. non carinate sepals and lack of the transverse callus."
