Found in Zaire, Tanzania, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe in Brachystegia woodland and at the edges of low altitude riverine forest at elevations of 500 to 1800 meters as a miniature sized, hot to warm growing terrestrial leafless saprophyte that is lacking all chlorophyll. The 1 to 4, erect flowers seem to arise straight from the humus covered ground with a few dark brown sheaths at the base. The flowers are very showy and have a strong lemon scent and occur in the later spring.
