Found in Magdalena department of Colombia and Chimborazo province of Ecuador in paramo among rocks or in montane scrub and thickets in ravinesat elevations of 2600 to 3900 meters as a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with that blooms in the fall and early winter on an erect, terminal, slender, 18" [45 cm] long overall, provided with and completly enveloped by to 12, thin, diaphanous, shortly acuminate sheaths, narrowly cylindrical, many flowered inflorescence with very hyaline, recurved medianally, ovate, obtuse, somewhat surpassing the flowers in length floral bracts and carrying small flowers

"M macra can be distinguished by the bracts equalling the flowers in length, the glandular pilose ovary, the lacerate-fimbriate lip margin and sepals which are shorter to as long as the lip." Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2019
