Found in Guatemala in dense tropical wet forests at elevations around 400 meters as a medium to large sized, hot growing epiphyte with spirally arranged, all along the stem, elliptic, acuminate, petiolate base leaves that blooms in the fall on a compact, 3.2 to 4.8" [8 to 12 cm] long, many flowered inflorescence with light brown with a green tinge, in the apical part, margins irregularily dentate, oval-elliptic, longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying rouge red flowers.
"The 3 Microchilus previously described Microchilus tridax, Microchilus luniferus and Microchilus vesicifer are well differentiated from the new species by their general appearance. Microchilus foliosus and Microchilus commelinoides endemic to Brazil are the most similar species. M commelioides differs in the color of the leaves, the more compact inflorescnece, the color of the flowers and fruits the shape of the petals elliptical versus spathulate, its very different lip with a rhombic, trilobed apical portion, the lateral lobes being falcate and the acuminate median lobe and its internally pubescent spur.
