Found in Thailand and Vietnam as a small sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte that blooms in the spring on a basal, single flowered inflorescence.
"Bulbophyllum smitinandii belongs to the group of closely related species of B. lobbii Lindl. complex including Bulbophyllum coweniorum from Laos and Vietnam, B. microglossum Ridl. (found in Thailand, Malacca Peninsula, Kalimantan) and B. orectopetalum Garay, Hamer et Siegerist (Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos)." Tuan and Averyanov 2017
