Common Name or Meaning The Short Beaked Cranichis

Flower Size

Found in Cundinamarca and Cauca departments of Colombia and Merida state of Venezuela at elevations around 2700 to 3500 meters as a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with 1 to 2, in a basal rosette, ellitpic to ovate, acute to shortly acuminate, crenate margins, cuneate below into the petiolate base leaves that blooms at most any time of the year on an erect, peduncle to 11.2" [28 cm] long, provided with distant sheathing bracts, rachis 1 to 2.28" [2.5 to 5.75 cm] long, subdensly many flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate, almost glabrous, longer than the ovary floral bracts.

"Renz noted that Cranichis brevirostris is possibly only a variation of C. monophylla, however, it is easily distinguished from this species by the crenate leaf margins, the suborbicular lip lacking callosities (vs lip ovate-oblong with numerous fleshy projections on the inner surface), subdensely-flowered inflorescence (vs rachis laxly flowered) and floral bracts longer than ovary (vs floral bracts shorter than ovary)."Kolan. & Szlach 2014
