Common Name or Meaning The Chiapas Cranichis [refers to the location]
Flower Size .32" [.8 cm]
Found in Chiapas state of Mexico in humid rainforests at elevations around 1344 meters as a small sized, cool growing terrestro-lithophyte with 3 basal, broadly lanceolate, petiolate 1.6" [4 cm] long, base leaves that blooms in the fall on an erect, terminal, peduncle 4.8" [12 cm] long, provided with 3 to 5, amplexicaul sheathing bracts, rachis 3.8" [9.5 cm] long, pyramidical, to 20 flowered inflorescence with green with white spotted, membraneous, unguiculate, shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying resupinate, fleshy, greenish white, greener in the apical half flowers.
"Most Cranichis have a long and thin peduncle that is provided with various sheathing bracts. C chiapensis is an exception with a short, thick peduncle with a few sheathing bracts. The flowers are similar to Cranichis apiculata as both have a white lip with a pattern of green rays or spots and a depression that divides the lip longitudinally, but the new species has a bilobulate lip whose borders form a cavity with a dark spot versus the apex of the lip that is semitriangular in form."
