Common Name or Meaning The Hairy Cranichis

Found in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Antioquia, Cundinamarca, Cauca, valle de Cauca, Colombia, Napo, Pichincha, Ecuador, the Galapagos, Aragua state of Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, and western Argentina in cloud forests at elevations around 750 to 3000 meters as a miniature to small sized, warm to to cold growing terrestrial with a few basal, matte clear green with dark green, elliptic, acute, petiolate base leaves that blooms in the late winter and again in the fall on an erect, purple, narrow, peduncle, remotely several sheathed, glabrous below, pubescent above, to 18 to 21.6" [45 to 54 cm] long, cylindric rachis, 1.6 to 6" [4 to 15 cm] long, loosely to subdensely many [40] flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate, glabrous, as long as to shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying white flowers marked with green or purple-brown.
C ciliata is similar to Cranichis sylvatica but differs in the orbiculate lip and the midstripe of the disk which extends beyond the lateral stripes and branches near the apex." Schweinfurth 1952
Distinguished by the nonfoliaceous peduncle, the green leaves, the petals cilate along the margins, the glabrous ovary, the single nerved dorsal sepal and the 2 nerved lateral sepals.
