Common Name or Meaning Fendler's Cranichis

Found in Aragua and Miranda states of Venezuela, Norte de Santander, Santander, Huila, and Cauca departments of Colombia and Huanuco department of Peru at elevations around 950 to 2360 meters as a small to medium sized, warm to cold growing terrestrial with 2 to 4, basal, erect-patent, elliptic to narrowly ovate, acute to shortly acuminate, cuneate and attenuate below into the canaliculate, petiolate base leaves that blooms in the fall and winter on a terminal, erect, peduncle 6 to 10" [6 to 25 cm] long, terete, thin, glabrous below, glandular-pubescent above, provided with 3 to 5, amplexicaul, acuminate sheathing bracts, rachis .8 to 6" [2 to 15 cm] long, subdensely many flowered inflorescence with erect-patent, ovate-lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, acuminate, shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying white, small, glabrous flowers.
"This species and Cranichis cylindrostchys are very close and differ only in the length and shape of the inflorescence, which is shorter in C cylindrosatchys and conical versus longer and cylindrical in C fendleri. Cranichis lehmannii can be distinguished by the foliaceous peduncle the glabrous ovary, the lip with a membraneous margin, the disc of the lip 3 veined and papillose-verrucose, the single veined, linear-oblong petals with entire margins, the elongate inflorescence that is narrowly cylindrical and subdensely many flowered, the elliptic lip with the disc from the base to the apical 1/4th cushion-like ballooned out."
