Common Name or Meaning The Cundinamarcae Gomphichis [The Capitol State of Colombia]

Flower Size

Found in Tachira state of Venezuela, Bolivar, Cundinamarca and Nariño departments of Colombia in brush along roads and in mosses within paramo at elevations around 2650 to 2800 meters as a small sized, cold growing terrestrial with 4 to 6 basal, oblong-ligulate, acute leaves that blooms in the summer fall and winter on an erect, terminal, stout, peduncle 29.6 to 46.4" [72 to 116 cm] long, rachis 3.l2 to 5.6" [8 to 14 cm] long, cylindrical, densely many flowered inflorescene with oblong-ovate, acuminate, sparsely pilose, ciliate on the margin, twice as long as the ovary floral bracts and carrying greenish white, externally sparsely glandular-pilose flowers.

"The species belongs to a group of orchids with distinctly petiolate leaves which are usually longer than 1/3 the length of the stem and has a compact dense inflorescence. However G cundinamarca is distinct by the floral bracts twice longer than the ovary and oblong-oblanceolate petals that are cuneate basally. A very similar species is Gomphichis scaposa but it has obtuse sepals versus acute in G cundinamarca. They may be conspecific, if so G scaposa takes precedence." Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2019
