Common Name The Monsterous Gomphichis [refers to the lip which appears to be the head of a monster]

Flower Size

Found in Cundinamarca and Huila departments of Colombia in montane forests at elevations around 2800 meters as a large sized, cold growing terrestrial with 4, basal, linear-oblanceolate, acuminate, tapering towards the sessile base leaves that blooms in the summer and fall on a terminal, erect, with 5 glabrous below, glandular above bracts, to 30" [75 cm] long, rachis to 5.2" [13 cm] long, cylindrical, densely many flowered inflorescence with linear-lanceolate, somewhat oblique, pubescent, much longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying relatively small flowers with externally pubescent sepals .

G monstruosa can be distinguished by its rhombic in outline, wider than long lip. The lateral lobes are obliquely triangular. The most distinct trait is the epichile adorned with 2 cushion-like callosities, well separated from each other." Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2019
