Found in New Guinea in lower montane forest. in leaf litter at elevations around 1300 meters as a giant sized, cool growing terrestrial with an erect, elongate, strict, terete, glabrous, leafy stem carrying erect-patent, lanceolate, ligulate, acuminate, glabrous leaves that blooms in the spring on an erect, cylindrical, to 8" [20 cm] long, many flowered inflorescence with erect-patent, lanceolate, acuminate, glabrous floral bracts that are as long as the green flowers with the petals and lip yellowish.
"Type material of Habenaria notabilis is known exclusively from the original Schlechter’s drawing and description. It can be easily separated from all other representatives of New Guinean Habenaria by the peculiar lip form, with the lateral lobes apically dilated and ornamented by a fascicle of aristate projections. In other species of the H. polyschista-group outgrowths can be found along both margins of the lateral lobes of the lip." Kolanowska etal 2021
