Found in southeastern Gansu, northeastern Guizhou, southern Qinghai, south and western Sichuan, eastern & Southern Xizang and northwestern Yunnan provinces of China, the eastern Himalayas, Nepal and the western Himalayas in forests, thickets and alpine grasslands at elevations of 2100 to 4500 meters as a mini-miniature sized, cold growing terrestrial with a subglobose to ovoid tuber giving rise to an erect to ascending stem provided with 1 to 2 tubular, basal sheaths and carrying 2, oblanceolate-spathulate to narrowly oblong, usually acute, gradually tapering below into the base leaves that boooms in the summer and earlier fall on a terminal, erect, peduncle ebracteate to rarely with 1 sterile bract, rachis .6 to 3.2" [1.5 to 8 cm] long,subdensely 6 to 20 flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate lower ones longer, the upper ones shorter than the ovary floral bracts.
