Found in Magdalena department of Colombia, Venezuela and Chimborazo province of Ecuador in the Sierra de Perija at elevations around 1700 to 2300 meters as a medium sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial with an ascending to erect, terete stem carrying 5 to 6, erect-patent, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acute, abruptly narrowing below into the narrowly petiolate base leaves that blooms in the winter on an erect, terminal, pubescent, 3.2" rachis cylindrical, densely many flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate, as long to somewhat shorter than the the ovary floral bracts.

"This species is related to M zeuxinoides but differs in the much smaller flowers and a very disimilar lip." Garay 1958

"The other species related to M quadratus is Microchilus anchoriferus but it has shorter floral bracts and pedicellate ovary, but longer floral segments which are externally pilose versus glandular in M quadratus." Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2017
