Found in New Mexico, Mexico and Guatemala in pine forests at elevations around 2440 meters as a small sized, cold growing terrestrial orchid with 1 to 2, deep blue green, emerging prior to, or with the inflorescence and fading shortly after anthesis, basal, petiolate, narrowly lanceolate, acute leaves that blooms in the summer on an erect, slender, 5 to 8 narrow tubular sheathed, 2.2 to 6.2" [5.5 to 15.5 cm] long, somewhat twisted, 10 to 30 flowered inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate, acute floral bracts and carrying sessile flowers
