Found in Ancash, Lima, Pasco, Huanuco, Junin, Huancavelica, Arequipa, Cusco, Puno and Moquegua departments of Peru, la Paz department of Bolivia and Jujuy and Catamarca provinces of Argentina as a miniature sized, cold growing terrestrial that blooms in the spring on an erect, 1.72 to 3.2"" [4.3 to 8 cm] long, provided with broad hyaline sheaths, obtuse, somewhat mucronate shjathing bracts, conic to cylindrical-conic, 14 to 27 flowered inflorescence with suborbicular-ovate, obtuse to rounded at the apex, with entire margins, shorter than the flowers floral bracts and carrying small flowers with the sepals and petals white-hyaline with the apex turning brown, lip green with white at the base and margin.
" Variations in the width of sepals and length of the midlobe of the lip have been observed in the Peruvian specimens of M. gymnandra. This species can be easily distinguished from all other species of the genus by the long column, the straight dorsal sepal (never revolute) and lip with a narrow opening."
