Common Name The Eyelash-Like Lipped Platanthera - In US White Fringed Orchid
Flower Size about 1/2" [1.25 cm]
Found in the northeastern US to Michigan and Canada in thickets along streams and swamps as a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial orchid with 2 to 3, elliptic to lanceolate, green keeled, basally clasping leaves that blooms in the late spring and summer on a terminal, erect, to almost 3' [90 cm] long, many [15 to 20] flowered, racemose inflorescence with slender, lanceolate, longer to somewhat shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying fragrant flowers.
The variety conspicua occurs from New Jersey south to Florida and southwest to Texas and differs from the species in being a larger plant with longer more robust inflorescence and larger better spaced flowers and the fringed lips more often than not bend upwards at the tip.
