Found only on Bonin in the Ogasawara Islands of Japan as a small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with a terete, robust stem enveloped basally by sheaths and carrying 5 to 10, the lower 2 to 3, erect-patent, oval to ovate, rarely elliptic, rounded to obtuse apically, amplexicaul and decurrent basally, membraneous, 9 to 16 ribbed leaves the upper leave, much smaller, adpressed to erect-patent, lanceolate, obtuse, attenuate semiamplexicaul leaves that blooms in the spring on an erect, terminal, rachis 2 to 4.8" [5 to 12 cm] long, many flowered inflorescence with erect-patent, foliaceous, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, obtuse, acumiante, as long as the ovary floral bracts and carrying greenish flowers
