Common Name Huangshan Mountain Platanthera [A moutain range in Anhui province of China]

Flower Size

Found in Anhui and Hunan province of China in marshlands at elevations of 800 to 1400 meters as a small to medium sized, warm to cool growing terrestrial with fusiform to narrowly fusiform tuberoids tapering to a long root-end giving rise to an erect to slightly arching stem carrying 1 to sometimes 2, subbasal, narrowly lanceolate, acute leaves 2 to 5 bracts above bract-like leaves above that blooms in the spring and summer on an erect, 2.8 to 8" [7 to 20 cm] long, 4 to 18 flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying secund flowers

"The morphological differences between P. tipuloides and P. whangshanensis are rather strong. P. tipuloides is a ‘true’ Platanthera in having concave stigma, suborbicular viscidia and flat rostellar arms, being similar in those traits to type species of the genus, P. bifolia . P. whangshanensis morphologically falls into ‘Tulotis’ group, having a convex stigma and concave viscidia. The only trait of P. whangshanensis which is not typical for ‘Tulotis’, are the narrowly fusiform tuberoids with a renewal bud at the base of the shoot of the earlier generation (in ‘Tulotis’ tuberoids are stoloniferous, placing a renewal bud at the distance of several cm away from the shoot of previous year). The leaves of Platanthera whangshanensis are longer (narrowly lanceolate vs. lanceolate to ovate in P. tipuloides), inflorescence is usually longer (occupies 1/3-1/2 of the stem vs. 1/3-1/5 in P. tipuloides), more laxly-flowered and asymmetrical. The lip of P. whangshanensis is lanceolate and the spur is always arched." Efimov 2013
