LATE EARLY

Common Name Barrow's Pleurothallis [British Cultivator of the species current]

Flower Size .6" [1.5 cm]

Found in Ecuador most likely without locational data as a medium sized, caespitose epiphyte with erect, terete ramicauls with a long tubular sheath below the middle and carrying a single, apical, horizontal-descending, dull green, deflexed, coriaceous, linear-ligulate to linear, acuminate, cordate base leaf that blooms in the late winter and early spring on an erect, through an erect spathe, peduncle .2" [5 mm] long. single ?owered, inflorescence with a tubular, obliquely trumpet-shaped, shorter than the pedicel floral bract.

"Part of the Pleurothallis cardiostola/Pleurothallis lilijae complex. Pleurothallis barrowii is in many respects similar to P. lanigera, which Luer (2005) considered conspecific with P. cardiostola. It differs in having flowers that are at least twice as large (dorsal sepal .88 to .96" [22 to 24 mm] versus .32 to .48" [8 to 12 mm]), an 11-veined dorsal sepal and a 10-veined synsepal (5 to 7-veined and 6-veined, respectively), a dorsal sepal that is distinctly longer than the synsepal (equal to the synsepal) and which has recurved margins (margins not recurved). The leaf is longer and proportionally narrower in P. barrowii. Wilson et al. (2016) describe or illustrate several species in the P. cardiostola complex, including P. lanigera, and it seems hard to deny that P. barrowii is as distinctive as any of these. Pleurothallis ortegae is another related species and is the name one ends up with if one tries to identify P. barrowii using the keys in Luer (2005), where P. barrowii falls in „Lot 2“, due to the cordate leaves and the large spathe. Pleurothallis barrowii, however, is overall more similar to P. lanigera than to P. ortegae for the reasons stated in the diagnosis." Schuitemann 2018
