Common Name or Meaning The Second P vasquezii Pleurothallis [Bolivian orchid expert and co-collector of the type current]

Flower Size .12" [3 mm]

Found in western Bolivia at elevations around 2770 meters as a small to medium sized, cold growing, ascending-repent epiphyte with erect ramicauls enveloped by a tubular sheath above the middle and 2 to 3 other sheaths below the middle and at the base and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, elliptical-oblong, obtuse, cuneate below into the base leaf that blooms in the earlier summer on 1 to 2, erect, arising from beneath the apex of the ramicaul, peduncle 1.2 to 1.6" [3 to 4 cm] long, to 8.8" [22 cm] long overall, strict, congested, secund, simultaneously many flowered inflorescence with shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying flowers with transluscent cream colored sepals edged in purple, purple veined cream colored petals, and a purple lip.

"The SUBGENUS Crocodeilanthe [Rchb.f & Warsc.]Luer 1986 is readily distinguished from the vegetatively similar Stelis Sw. by dissimilar sepals, simple petals, a lip articulated with the tip of the column-foot, and a terete column with an entire stigma. This species is characterized by a large, ascending habit; a petiolate leaf surpassed by a strict, congested, secund, simultaneously many flowered raceme of small, campanulate flowers with single-veined petals; and large, erect lateral lobes of the lip flanking a central cavity in addition to the articulating cavity at the base. P dueterovasquzii is related to the widely distributed P velaticaulis Rchb.f., from which it differs with smaller flowers with proportionately wider floral parts and single-veined petals."
