Common Name Lapo's Pleurothallis [Lester Lapo, Ecuadorian outstanding orchid grower from El Pangui, Zamora Chinchipe Province, who discovered the species current]

Flower Size .12" [3 mm]

Found in Zamora-Chinchipe province of Ecuador in lower montane forests near or on very steep slopes at elevations around 1560 meters as a small sized, cool growing, caespitose epiphyte with slender, suberect, terete ramicauls enveloped by 1 papyraceous sheaths at the base and one below the middle and carrying a single, green, slightly falcate to falcate, ovate, shortly attenuate, glossy, centrally channeled, margins revolute, cordate base leaf that blooms in the late winter and early spring on an erect, produced from a reclined, papyraceous, spathe, peduncle .252" to .272" [6.3–6.8 mm] long, fascicle of successively single flowered inflorescence with a infundibuliform, about half as long as the pedicel and ovary floral bract.

"The new species is distinguished from other species of Pleurothallis subsect. Macrophyllae-Fasciculatae by its small purple flowers, acute sepals, and verrucose-papillose, triangular-ovate, yellow lip. It is most similar to Pleurothallis erythrium. Pleurothallis lapoi can be distinguished from P. erythrium by its larger plants (up to 7.6" [19 cm] vs. 5.2" [12 cm] tall), convex leaves with revolute margins (vs. concave with flat margins) and the flowers with acute, verrucose sepals and lip (vs. papillose, subacute)."
