Common Name Ansaloni's Pterichis [Rafaella Ansaloni - Ecuadorian curator of the Herbaria Azuay HA]

Flower Size

Found in Azuay province of Ecuador in cloud forests at elevations around 4100 meters as a small sized, cold growing terrestrial with an unknown leaf that blooms in the summer on an erect, peduncle [12 to 24 cm] long, provided with 5 to 6 prominent sheaths, [18 to 30 cm] long overall, rachis 2.4" [6 cm] long, ciliate, congested, few flowered inflorescence with ovate, rounded, glabrous, shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying Flowers with green sepals and a yellow lip with brown-purple lines.

"This species resembles Pterichis diuris from which it can be distinguished by more or less lanceolate, ciliate petals (vs. glabrous, obliquely elliptic), broadly truncate lip base, presence of prominent knob-like projections on the lip margins (vs. with large glands along the margin), and larger mid lobe of the lip (almost as long as the lip lamina vs. constituting ca. 1/6 of the lip length). The similar, long lip mid lobe is observed in P. aragogiana, but this species has sepals that are caudate and the petals are linear and glabrous. Kolanowska 2021
