Common Name Halbinger's Schomburgkia [Mexican Orchid Enthusiast and major contributor to the taxomony of Barkeria, Rhynchostele and Laelia 1925 - 2007]

Found in Oaxaca state of Mexico in tropical semi-deciduous forest, Quercus forest, moist Pinus-Quercus forest and mountain rain forest at elevations of 800 to 2000 meters as a medium sized [excluding the inflorescence], warm to cool growing epiphyte with a conspicuous rhizome covered when young by adpressed, tubular, obtuse, scarious sheaths, these at first straw yellow but turning blackish with time and then falling off, with 1.6 to 2.8" [4 to 7 cm] between each fusiform, stipitate, slightly compressed laterally, 4 to 5 internoded, often sulcate longitudinally, internodes with scarious sheaths, 6 to 17.4" [15 t o41 cm] long pseudobulbs carrying t, rigidly coriaceous, oblong-lanceolate to oblong-elliptic, carinate, rounded amd shprtly apiculate apically, condulpicate at the cuneate base leaves that blooms in the fall on a terminal, arising on a newly matured pseudobulb, 19.2 to 28" [48 to 70 cm] long, erct to erect-arcuate, racemose, long pedunculate, peduncle subterete, 10.8 to 20" [27 to 50 cm] long, without a basal spathe but provided with strict, tubular, scarious, obtuse to acute bracts, rachis to 12" [30 cm] long, spirally arranged, simultanoeusly 6 to 13 flowered inflorescence with spreading, herbaceous to scarious, greenish yellow, oblong-elliptic, acuminate, margins involute floral bracts and carrying showy, resupinate, odorless flowers.

Similar to S superbiens but S halbingerii differs in the proportionately shorter, stouter pseudobulbs, the low entire, distally white keels of the lip and the obscurely bilobed anther.
