Found in Afghanistan, West Himalaya, Assam, Nepal, East Himalaya, India, Sri Lanka, China South-Central, China Southeast, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Taiwan, the Ryukyu Islands and Japan of paddy fields, grassy marshlands and wet areas along streams at elevations of 1000 to 1200 meters as a small sized, cool growing terrestrial with a perennating rhizome giving rise to clustered about the base, 2 to 5, broadly linear or linear-lanceolate, 3-veined with depression on upper surface and elevated lining underneath, spreading from the base of the stem leaves that blooms in the late winter and spring on an erect, terminal, peduncle to 12" [30 cm] long, terete, pubescent, covered with glandular hairs, provided with 1 to 3 sterile sheathing bracts, rachis 2" [5 cm] long, spirally arranged, many flowered inflorescence with green, ovate-lanceolate,acuminate, hairy on the outer surface, equal to or longer than the combined length of pedicel and ovary floral bracts and carrying glandular-pubescent, white to pale butter white flowers
