Found on the eastern Himalayas, Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan provinces of China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Ogasawara Islands Japan and Taiwan on semi-shady, rocky slopes facing south with shallow soil at the edge of scrub-forest at around 700 meters as a miniature to small sized, cold growing terrestrial with a rhizome giving rise to an erect stem carrying 5, elliptic-lanceolate, acute, abruptly narrowing below into the petiolate base leaves that blooms in the winter and spring on an erect, peduncle 5" [12.5 cm] long, provided with 2 sterile bracts, hairy, rachis 1" [2.5 cm] long, 8 flowered inflorescence.

In 1898 King and Pantling confused this species with Z flava and so it was placed there, then Garay & Sweet in 1976 considered to be a synonym of Z parviflora but recent research has confirmed its distinctness.
