Common Name The Broad-Stemmed Dendrobium
Flower Size 3/8 to 3/4" [1 to 1.5 cm]
Found throughout SE Asia, Java, Sumatra and Borneo in very open keranga, hill, and lower montane forests as a miniature, hot to warm growing epiphyte at elevations of sealevel to 1300 [2100] meters low on tree trunks in swamps, orchards, open country and along roadsides and always with bright light. It has glossy, basally wiry, swollen apically stems carrying 2, succulent, thick, fleshy, oblong, glossy, yellow green leaves with red tips and blooms on a short to 3/8" [to 1 cm], axillary, successive or simultaneously opening, few flowered inflorescence with short lived, fragrant flowers arising from between the leaves and occuring in the spring. This species appreciates a treefern mount if they are watered daily with a reduction in the winter and kept in a high humidity situation. This species seems to be triggered by a cool rainfall after which in a few days the flowers appear, much the same as in D crumenatum.
