Common Name Incumbent or Aromatic Encyclia
Flower Size to 1 1/2" [3.75 cm]
Found in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and El Salvador in pine-oak and oak forests at elevations of 750 to 2100 meters as a small sized, warm to cold growing epiphyte with conical to subspheric, clustered pseudobulbs that are often dark purple brown carrying 1 to 2 apical, linear-ligulate or elliptic-ligulate, acute or obtuse leaves and blooms in the spring on an apical, to almost 3' [90 cm] long, erect to gently arching paniculate, many flowered inflorescence carrying close set, fragrant [not so good] flowers that can be highly variable in color.
"This handsome species can be recognized by the paniculate inflorescence usually bearing many flowers. The petals and column are arcuate, the latter somewhat sigmoid in profile. It is closely related to Encyclia candollei (Lindl.) Schltr. from eastern Mexico, with narrower, smaller, segments, the lip less definitely 3-lobed, tubular, with porrect lateral lobes, and lacking the minutely warty veins of the midlobe. This species is widely known as Encyclia aromatica (Bateman) Schltr., but this name is based on Epidendrum aromaticum Bateman, which was illegitime at the time of its publication because it was anteceded by E. aromaticum (Sw. ) J.Parm." Miguel Soto 2002
